Unique idea - “A Fascination for Deserts” may appear like a coffee table photography album, but it is much more than that, because when deliberating possible concepts for presenting Sikorski’s thirty years’ long adventure with photographing deserts, we looked into some art and visual perception theories that could provide us with a useful formula. Amongst them the Nine Laws of Composition by the Victorian artist, art critic and theoretician, John Ruskin. A friend of the Pre-Raphaelites and the innovative landscape painter J.M.W. Turner, Ruskin formulated his picture composition doctrines at length in The Elements of Drawing, published in 1857. Despite the noteworthy renewed interest in John Ruskin in American artistic circles - not least his Nine Laws of Composition as seen as directly relevant to screenplays - there has been a conspicuous lack of contemporary images to explain them by. We believe that the way our book’s structure and layout depicts and thematizes the amazing forms and colours of desert landscapes, it is likely not only to amaze visual artists, designers or photographers of today, but make them aware of the rules of picture composition, too. “A Fascination for Desert” straddles thus the boundaries of landscape photography, visual design and art history.
